What is First Tech Challenge?

First Tech Challenge is a 6 month long competition where teams compete under challenging regulations and limited time. Teams are challenged to raise funds, hone in teamwork skills, and most importantly, construct an industrial-sized robot. Robots are restricted to a size of 18 inches by 18 inches. Additionally, FTC teams are challenged to reach out to the community and share their unique knowledge and inspire the next generation of FIRST innovators.

Autonomous Operation

Every First Tech Challenge match begins with the Autonomous Period. During this challenge, teams may score points using only pre-programmed instructions stored on the robot. Robots can score points in a variety of ways, typically through the movement of season-specific scoring elements. The autonomous period also includes scoring tasks relying on computer vision to identify randomized target locations and scoring zones.

Tele-op period

The tele-op period is the second phase of a First Tech Challenge Match. During this phase, the robot is controlled via driver input through a gamepad. Robots can score points primarily through the placement of scoring elements. After the 1:30 tele-op period, the endgame period begins. During this period, teams can score points through the same ways as the regular tele-op period, and also score through auxiliary tasks, such as climbing, parking, or launching a drone.
